A deep-tech company developing next-generation photonic computing systems is looking for a Senior Photonics Engineer to take a leading role in advancing integrated photonic component performance.
This is an opportunity for an experienced PIC engineer who enjoys working at the boundary between device physics, photonic design and practical fabrication — with significant influence over technical direction.
Responsibilities
- Define performance targets and technical direction for advanced photonic components and PIC platforms.
- Design and optimise ultra-low-loss passive components and electro-optic modulators.
- Work across the complete PIC lifecycle: design, simulation, fabrication, characterisation and packaging.
- Use simulation tools including Lumerical MODE and FDTD to develop and optimise device designs.
- Work closely with fabrication, test and packaging engineers to identify root causes of performance limitations.
- Assess alternative photonic platforms, materials and integration approaches and their associated trade-offs.
- Translate state-of-the-art performance targets into practical design, process and characterisation requirements.
- Contribute to technical publications, patents and external technology partnerships.
Requirements
- Strong industry or research background in photonic integrated circuits and device physics.
- Demonstrable experience pushing component performance towards state-of-the-art levels.
- Broad technical understanding spanning PIC design, fabrication, testing and packaging.
- Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills.
- Experience with silicon photonics would be highly valuable.
- Background in quantum photonics or quantum optics is advantageous.
- PhD in Photonics, Physics, Electrical Engineering or a related discipline preferred.
- Based in Austin, TX with hybrid working.
